The London Trauma Practice was founded by psychotherapist Claire Ewart Smith in 2026 after her success with Therapydia, a UK-based therapy practice. The London Trauma Practice was established to provide a unique package of trauma therapies that work effectively together, managed by Claire and her consultant therapists.
Claire is a trauma clinician with 15 years of experience, having served as Clinical Director for Khiron Clinics IOP, where she set up the Day Clinic in 2021. Currently, she offers trauma-informed private care for clients dealing with complex trauma (C-PTSD) and PTSD stemming from single-event trauma. She uses evidence-based science informed interventions such as EMDR to help distressing memories, neurofeedback to settle neural pathways in the brain, somatic bodywork to release trauma held in the body as fear and incomplete responses, mindfulness to bring present moment strength, and Polyvagal theory to build tolerance and change your relationship to fight/flight/freeze. All these tools regulate the nervous system, resolve trauma symptoms such as anxiety, depression, dissociation, OCD, rumination, feeling hopeless or helpless, hyper-vigilance and self-harm and create healthy relationships.
She employs these trauma modalities as part of a cohesive united framework, integrating them into a three-stage trauma model known as The Safety Net.
Claire is a fully qualified and accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as a member of the EMDR Association UK and the Sensorimotor Institute. With a background in Business and Finance, she later pursued an MA in Psychotherapy. Her experience as an entrepreneur, running a successful design company for two decades, has enriched her therapeutic skills, particularly in professional development, leadership, and stress management.
I started seeing Claire 2 years ago after spending a significant amount of time in inpatient care. I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to manage in the community as this had proved challenging in the past and I was worried I would be readmitted. However with Claire’s support and encouragement, I have managed to build not just a life for myself, but a life that I love, that, that makes me truly happy, and a life that I want to live. Since seeing Claire I have been able to return to education, a goal of mine that 2 years felt completely unrealistic, I have been able to achieve things that I would have never imagined possible, and I can safely say that my trauma no longer holds me back or stops me chasing my dreams. It’s not just me who feels eternally grateful for Claire, but also my friends and family who didn’t just gain the old me back, but rather gained the happiest version of me that I’ve ever been. Therapy with Claire has truly been a turning point in my life. Until I met Claire I felt like I had exhausted all of my treatment options. Now I realise that I had just needed someone with this specific knowledge, dedication and approach all along. For the first time in years I feel seen, heard and understood. Claire helped me to finally feel a level of safety that enabled me to start living in the present instead of being anchored in the past. I’m forever grateful and finally looking ahead. Forty years of talking therapy had offered me insights galore but had not manifest real change in the ongoing impact of trauma in my life. Working with The London Trauma Practice has helped shift CPTSD in fundamental ways that, at last, is allowing post traumatic growth to begin.
In my experience it is not just the capacity to intuit when different modalities may be helpful, and facilitate their use expertly that has enabled this change. It is the profound empathy that has created a context of safety that has begun to shift my nervous system out of a state of fear, to one of that is growing new perspectives and hope."
